Softball Dealt a Couple of Tough Losses at Post

Goldey-Beacom battled against one of the perennially top teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, but was handed losses by scored of 4-3 in eight innings and 4-2 in Waterbury, CT.

Goldey-Beacom in game one scored three times in the top of the seventh for a 3-0 lead.  Senior Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) notched an RBI bunt single, sophomore Kylie Quirk (Newark, DE) crossed home on an error and junior Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) drew a bases-loaded walk.

But the Eagles unbelievably tied it in the last of the frame, getting the first two runners on before Sara Selimovski crushed a three-run long ball.  Selimovski then lowered the curtain in the eighth with an RBI single that plated Brianna Koref.

Freshman Ali Henriquez (Hoboken, NJ) rapped three hits with Quirk and senior Autumn Hollis (Elkton, MD) getting two apiece for the Lightning.  Middletown, DE freshman Taylor Beres (1-10) struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings.

Emily Schaffer had three hits with Selimovski getting her two clutch knocks.  Leigha Goldsack (4-3) got the win over 1 2/3 frames after Leslie Denis struck out six over 6 1/3 innings.

GBC in game two took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Conway scored on a double play.  Davis scored on an error in the second to double the margin.

But the Eagles put up a picket fence from the second through fifth innings for the final.  Megan McCormack launched a solo homer in the second, Schaffer scored on a passed ball in the third for the tie and Leyri Rivera in the fourth tripled home what proved to be the deciding run.

McCormack had two hits and two RBI with Koref getting two hits for the Eagles (13-17, 11-5 CACC).  Bridget Betley (3-2) yielded two runs – one earned – and four hits over 5 1/3 innings before Goldsack tossed a hitless 1 2/3 frames for her second save of the year.

Millville, NJ junior Alexa Calareso (0-5) struck out two over 4 2/3 frames for the Lightning (2-23, 2-14).

Goldey-Beacom is home Sunday against Shippensburg for a 1:00 pm doubleheader at the Jackson Complex.
