Softball Opens 2018 Campaign at the Pioneer Classic

Goldey-Beacom made its way to Greeneville, TN and opened its 2018 campaign at the Pioneer Classic, hosted by Tusculum College.

GBC began with a 9-0 loss to Tusculum, followed by a 14-0 setback to UVA-Wise in the first of a doubleheader between the schools before a tough 3-2, eight-inning loss in the nightcap.

GBC in its first game saw junior Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) rip a double with senior Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) and freshman Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, MD) recording a single apiece.  Tower City, PA senior Kylie Doyle (0-1) allowed five earned runs and six hits over two innings before freshman Taylor Beres (Middletown, DE) struck out two over four frames.

Emily Hester had a double, a home run and four RBI with Anna Alloway rapping two doubles for the Pioneers (11-8).  Allison Pate yielded just one hit over three innings and Ivee Richesin followed with three scoreless frames, striking out two and allowing two hits.

Game one of the doubleheader with UVA-Wise produced Lockwood getting another single with freshman Ali Henriquez (Hoboken, NJ) following suit.  Millville, NJ junior Alexa Calareso (0-1) struck out one over 1 2/3 innings before Doyle tossed the final 3 1/3 frames.

Bridget Henzel went 3-for-3 with four RBI for the Cavaliers and Alexis Sheehan collected three RBI as part of the squad's 18-hit attack.  Taylor Brandts struck out nine over five innings, firing a two-hit shutout and facing just three batters above the minimum.

GBC in its second game against the Cavaliers pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning.  Beres had an infield single to plate Lockwood and senior Autumn Hollis (Elkton, MD) followed with an RBI single that scored Doyle.

UVA-Wise then got an RBI single in the second from Ava Hockey and a run-scoring double from Kaylee Jones in the fifth for a 2-2 tie.

The teams needed extra innings and it was the Cavaliers getting the winning run in the eighth with Zoe Millard scoring on a wild pitch.

Beres (0-1) pitched great in the finale, striking out eight and allowing three runs – two earned – and seven hits over 7 2/3 frames for the Lightning (0-3).

Raychel Lapallo went all eight innings for the Cavaliers (9-5), yielding two unearned runs and four hits with two strikeouts.

Today marked the first time Goldey-Beacom played more than two games in one day since it took part in four contests on February 27, 2009.  That was in Fayetteville, NC with two games against Fayetteville State and one each vs. Hood and York (PA).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday closes its stay in Tennessee against Belmont Abbey at 11:00 am and Tusculum after 5:00 pm.
