Softball Handed Two Tough Setbacks at USciences

Goldey-Beacom once again battled in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play, but was dealt losses by scores of 5-4 and 5-0 at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom in game one scored twice in the top of the first inning.  Freshman Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, MD) lined a leadoff double, senior Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) followed with a bunt single and junior Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) drove them both home with a two-out double.

Davis in the third inning again came through with an RBI single to center field, making it 3-0.  Senior Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 4-1 margin.

But the Devils plated the last four runs for the victory.  Madison LaPlante lined an RBI single in the fourth, Lauren Davis scored on a wild pitch in the fifth and Sara Pietropola ripped a two-run single in the sixth.

Rachel Davis was the star for the Lightning, going 4-for-4 with three RBI to tie her career best in hits and RBI.  Middletown, DE freshman Taylor Beres (0-4) struck out two, but gave up a run and one hit.

LaPlante went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Pietropola also had two hits.  Savanna Ruppert (2-4) struck out three over three scoreless frames and allowed two hits for the win.

USciences in the nightcap did its damage during a four-run third inning, opening a 5-0 lead.  LaPlante lined an RBI triple, Harris recorded a run-scoring groundout and Gina Pustizzi launched a two-run homer.

Brandle and Conway each had a hit for the Lightning (0-9, 0-4 CACC).  Millville, NJ junior Alexa Calareso (0-2) permitted five runs and nine hits over six innings.

LaPlante, Davis and Rebecca Colandrea collected two hits apiece for the Devils (6-14, 3-3).  Kaitlyn Gaynor (3-3) struck out seven over seven innings, firing a two-hit shutout.

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday again is on the road, this time to battle Felician in a 2:30 pm doubleheader in Rutherford, NJ.
