Softball Ends Play at the Pioneer Classic

Goldey-Beacom closed its stay at the Pioneer Classic in Greeneville, TN with a 9-4 loss to Belmont Abbey and an 8-0 setback to Tusculum.

GBC in its game with Belmont Abbey fell into a 6-0 hole through four innings.  Elena Duran had a two-run single in the third inning for the Crusaders and Kaitlin Moore delivered a two-RBI double in the fourth.

The Lightning got three of those runs back in the fifth for a 6-3 deficit.  Junior Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, NJ) lined a two-run single.

The Crusaders restored their margin in the last of the fifth for a 9-3 contest.  Morgan Smith recorded an infield single to score Katie Allison and Moore again came through with a two-run single.

GBC senior Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) scored on a grounder by sophomore Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) in sixth for the final.

Tower City, PA senior Kylie Doyle (0-2) struck out two over six innings for the Lightning.

Moore, Allison and Brianna Embler recorded three hits apiece as part of Belmont Abbey's 17-hit arsenal.  Ivorie Maltby (3-2) struck out six over seven innings, permitting four unearned runs and seven hits.

Tusculum in the day's final contest broke the ice with three runs in the last of the fourth inning.  Taylor Battle had an infield single that plated Brittney Franse and Anna Alloway cracked a two-out, two-run homer to left-center field.

The Pioneers then ended the contest with five runs in the sixth to win via the run rule.  Battle ripped an RBI triple down the left-field line, Delaney Guerrero followed with a run-scoring groundout and Emily Hester sent everyone home with a three-run long ball.

Middletown, DE freshman Taylor Beres (0-2) struck out four over 5 2/3 innings, but gave up eight runs for Goldey-Beacom (0-5).

Alloway ended with three hits and Taylor Plemons (4-4) tossed a five-hit shutout with four strikeouts for the Pioneers (14-9).

Freshman Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, MD) ended the weekend with a hit in four of the five contests for the Lightning.
