Men’s Basketball Makes It Six Straight with Triumph at Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom seized control in the second half and was on its way to a sixth consecutive win, 76-67 at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference-foe Holy Family in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom led by as many as 12 in the opening half, but gave up the period's final seven points and held a 37-32 cushion at intermission. Junior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) scored eight points in the half with senior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) adding seven and seven rebounds.

The Lightning early in the second half exploded on a 21-3 run spanning just under six minutes to open its biggest lead, 58-37 with 11:39 remaining.  Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) scored seven points in that span with fellow junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) and freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) adding five apiece.

The Tigers refused to fold, using a 19-3 spurt in just under six minutes to move to 61-56 with 5:56 left.  Maliq Sanders netted 11 points to help his side shoot 7-of-13 from the field in that time.

With the margin 63-58, Goldey-Beacom took over by using a 9-2 run to open a 72-58 lead with 1:44 to go.  Taite again was the man for the Lightning, scoring five points and capping it with a 3-pointer.

Taite once again lit up the stat sheet.  The reigning CACC Player of the Week ended with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.  He now is seventh in team history with 1,112 points and sixth with 349 field goals.

Johnson poured in 15 points, Livingston and Stancil netted 12 apiece with Thompson hauling in 12 rebounds for the Lightning, who shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the floor.

GBC also forced 20 turnovers, marking the 17th time this season it has induced at least 19.

Sanders poured in 26 points, Michael Power scored 19, Terrell Jones netted 14 with Sean Griffin adding 12 rebounds for the Tigers (2-20, 1-13 CACC), who also shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom (15-8, 11-3) remains one-half game behind Jefferson (12-3) for first place in the CACC South Division and two games ahead of idle Wilmington (9-5) for second.  The top two teams in each division host a quarterfinal in the conference tournament.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Dominican (NY) as part of the College's second annual "Hoop It Up."  Game time is 6:00 pm, following the women's 4:00 pm contest.
