Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Notches 79-71 Triumph at Wilmington (DE)

Goldey-Beacom pulled away in the last five minutes thanks to clutch shooting and more strong defense for 79-71 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph at Wilmington in Newark, DE.

A 69-69 game would not be tied for the rest of the way after junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) canned a 3-pointer with 4:25 remaining.  Taite hit a free throw with four minutes to play for a 73-69 contest before Wilmington's Miles Gillette made a layup on the next possession for a two-point contest.

It would be the Wildcats' final points as the Lightning's defense took over.  After junior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) canned a 3-pointer for a 76-71 margin, the visitors came up with nothing but stops.  That included a critical steal by senior Isiah Graves (Atlantic City, NJ) off Gillette with 20 seconds left to end it.

Taite scored 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting with five rebounds, four assists, two steals and two 3-pointers over 35 minutes.  He now is fourth in school history with 261 assists and fifth with 374 field goals.

Senior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) had 16 points and seven rebounds with freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) adding 16 and six for the Lightning, who shot 48 percent (30-of-63) from the field.

Jermaine Head scored 23 points, Gillette poured in 20 to go with 10 rebounds and Nick Richards netted 10 points for the Wildcats (16-12, 11-8 CACC), who shot just 29 percent (8-of-28) from the field in the second half.

Livingston scored 15 points in the opening half, when Goldey-Beacom opened a 46-44 lead by shooting 54 percent (19-of-35) from the floor.  Head netted 13 points and Gillette added 11 to help the Wildcats hits 55 percent (17-of-31) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom (19-9, 15-4), champions of the CACC South Division for the third time in team history, broke the school record for most conference wins in a season.  It had won 14 league games last season.
