Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Tops Felician in CACC Tournament Quarterfinals

Juniors Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) and Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) could not have played any better in helping lead the charge for Goldey-Beacom to an 87-80 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinal victory over Felician at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom, champions of the CACC South Division for the third time in school history, is off to the semifinals Saturday against Dominican (NY) at 5:00 pm.  That game will be played on the campus of Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.

The Lightning (20-9) also tied the school record with their 20th victory – getting it for the fourth time – and notched back to back 20-win seasons for the second time in team annals (2009-10, 2010-11).

GBC also improves to 5-1 in home conference-tournament games with its fifth straight win.

Felician led for almost the entire first half, but Taite made sure Goldey-Beacom stayed in the contest.  The CACC Player of the Year scored 10 points during a half-ending 12-3 run to give the Lightning a 43-38 lead.

Johnson scored 15 points in the half on 5-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers and Taite netted 14 on 5-of-10 shooting for GBC, which shot 52 percent (16-of-31) from the field.  Terrell Spaulding poured in 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting for the Golden Falcons, who shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the floor.

The game remained up for grabs until the Lightning finally ended all upset hopes.  The home side got the student section going with a 14-5 run over five minutes to give GBC its biggest lead, 78-65 with 3:11 remaining.

Taite again was spectacular, pouring in 28 points to go with nine rebounds, five assists, four 3-pointers and three steals for the Lightning, who ended shooting 44 percent (29-of-66) from the floor for their 11th victory in the last 12 outings.  Johnson ended with a season-best 22 points and senior Isiah Graves (Atlantic City, NJ) scored 12.

Spaulding did everything he could with 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting and 12 rebounds for Felician (12-16), who shot 50 percent (31-of-62) from the field.  Zamir Wright netted 17 points, Gjaimeir Stanford netted 14 and Rahsaan Williams added 10.

The Lightning forced the Golden Falcons into 20 turnovers, marking the 15th time this season the opponents have reached at least that number.
