Goldey-Beacom picked up its first two wins of the 2018 season at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C. with victories of 7-1 and 10-7.
In game one, Brandon Abdul (1-0) brought a stellar performance to the mound for the Lightning. The junior from Old Bridge, N.J. pitched seven innings, allowed two hits with one earned run and totaled five strikeouts.
Goldey-Beacom turned Hawkins Field into a home run derby, smacking three home runs to help firmly grasp the victory. In the third inning, junior Matthew Buckery (Wilmington, Del.) went yard for a two-run homer giving Goldey-Beacom the lead. Several batters later, junior Calvin Clark (2-for-3) from Millville, N.J., crushed a three-run homer to stamp the victory. Senior Jay Smith (Zeeland, Mich.) also added a home run in the seventh inning.
Cody Smith (0-2) took the loss on the mound for the Hawks. He pitched six innings, allowed five hits and five earned runs.
During game two, the Hawks committed several fielding errors leading to a four-run first inning for the Lightning.Â
After their initial drought, the Hawks flew on a 7-0 run through the next several innings. Robert Williams began the streak with a solo homer to center field. Nick Rose hit in the seventh run with a two-run single through the right side.
However, Goldey-Beacom found their way back to the light capping off six runs in the final two innings.
With one out remaining in the sixth inning, Abdul showed he can do it all by coming in as a pinch hitter and batting a double to left field scoring two runs on the play.
Edwin Lee (3-for-4 with five RBI), the senior from La Plata, Md., immediately followed Abdul with a three-run homer to right center field pushing the lead to 9-7, and eventually completing the come from behind win for the Lightning.
Jake Trejo (1-0), the senior from Wauseon, Ohio, got the win for the Lightning while pitching three innings and allowing four hits with no earned runs.
Trenton Lee (1-1) took the loss the mound for the Hawks (4-9).
Goldey-Beacom (2-3) will rematch Chowan on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to take place in Murfreesboro, North Carolina at noon.
