Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Wins CACC South With 76-65 Triumph Over Jefferson

Goldey-Beacom went on a late run to gain momentum, get the home crowd fired up and clinch the squad's first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division title since 2012 with a 76-65 victory over Jefferson at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

An 18-8 run looked to be good enough for the Lightning, who opened what seemed like an insurmountable 58-39 lead with 10:56 left.  Freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) was all over the place with seven points to help his unit shoot 6-of-9 from the floor.

The Rams, who came in just one game behind the Lightning in the division, did not go away.  A 16-4 spurt by the visitors suddenly made it 62-55 margin with 6:35 and had the outcome in doubt.  Kaison Randolph poured in nine points in that time, helping Jefferson hit 6-of-8 from the field.

Then came the biggest plays of the game.  GBC senior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) committed a turnover and Jefferson looked to do more damage.  But Kylan Guerra missed a reverse layup that would have brought his side within five.  Instead, Livingston grabbed the rebound and junior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) canned a jumper to make it 64-55 with 5:53.

From there, the momentum belonged on the home side.  Johnson hit a 3-pointer and Thompson followed with one of his thunderous dunks to for a 69-55 margin with 4:41 left, making the decision all but official.

It was a 14-3 run after Guerra's missed layup that turned the tide for GBC, keyed by Johnson's eight points and Thompson's four.

Livingston was the main factor with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and six rebounds over 38 minutes.  He has scored in double figures eight of his last nine games and 13 of his last 17.

Johnson ended with 15 points and Thompson netted 11 for the Lightning (18-9, 14-4 CACC), who shot 53 percent (28-of-53) from the field and 10-of-16 from 3-point range.

Randolph scored 19 points, Guerra netted 13, Alex Gorton poured in 13 and Josh Bradanese added 12 for the Rams (17-13, 12-6), who shot 40 percent (20-of-50) from the floor.

In clinching the division, Goldey-Beacom will host Felician in the conference quarterfinals next Tuesday at 7:00 pm in Wilmington.  Before that, GBC closes the regular season Saturday at Wilmington (DE) in a 3:00 pm contest.
