Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball’s Winning Streak Snapped with Loss to Dominican

Goldey-Beacom let a double-digit lead in the second half get away and saw its eight-game winning streak snapped with a 75-73 loss to Dominican (NY) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning held a 62-52 lead with 10:43 left and looked on their way to extending the streak.  But the Chargers used an 18-7 run over 7 1/2 minutes to grab only their second lead of the game, 70-69 with 3:12 left.  Ian Gardener netted seven points in that span for Dominican, which shot 5-of-10 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the line.

Junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) made two free throws with 2:44 remaining and senior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) added one with 1:51 to play for a 72-70 GBC lead.  But Daniel Grant was fouled for the Chargers with 1:27 left and his two free throws leveled things at 72.

Dominican had the ball in the final minute and again called Grant's name.  He was able to drive into the lane and make a layup as he was fouled with 45 seconds to go.  Grant missed the free throw to keep the score at 74-72.

GBC looked to Taite for a level scoreboard, but his shot was blocked by Daraja Rodwell and E.J. Smith got the defensive rebound.  However, Smith was called for traveling with 29 seconds left and GBC had new life.

Thompson committed a turnover that gave Dominican the ball, but Goldey-Beacom's defense forced Rodwell into a turnover of his own and junior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) came up with the ball.

Johnson then drove and then fed Thompson for what looked like the tying layup, but senior Isiah Graves (Atlantic City, NJ) touched the ball in the cylinder with 8.7 seconds left for a turnover.

Jonathan Garcia made one free throw with six seconds left and Taite made one with four seconds to go for a 75-73 game.  Dominican looked to run out the clock, but committed a traveling violation with three seconds left that set up the final possession.

Again Taite was called up for GBC, but his three-point attempt for the win fell short at the buzzer.

Taite scored 21 points in shooting 13-for-16 from the line, Thompson poured in 18 points, Johnson netted 12 and freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) added 11 for the Lightning, who shot only 35 percent (19-of-55) from the floor and 29-for-43 from the line.

Grant poured in 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting, Garcia scored 14 and Gardener added 13 for the Chargers (19-7, 13-4 CACC), who shot 46 percent (25-of-54) from the field and won despite committing 22 turnovers to clinch a home game in the conference-tournament quarterfinals.

It is the 18th time this season the Lightning have induced at least 19 turnovers.

GBC (17-9, 13-4) remains in sole possession of first place in the CACC South Division, one game ahead of Jefferson (12-5).  Both teams have clinched a home game in the conference quarterfinals, but they will do battle Wednesday at the Jones Center with the top spot on the line.

Game time is 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
