Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops' Great Defense Goes For Naught in Loss at No. 12 USciences

Goldey-Beacom played exceptional defense throughout the contest, but saw its offense shut down in the fourth quarter and was handed a 41-32 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at 12th-ranked University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom's defense was on display in the first quarter, forcing USciences to shoot just 33 percent (5-of-15) from the floor in the first half.  Despite trailing 14-9 at quarter time, the Lightning continued their strong play in the second period by again limiting the Devils to 33 percent (3-of-9) and forging a 20-20 tie.

Sophomore Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) and senior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) scored six points apiece in the half for the Lightning, who shot 45 percent (9-of-20) from the floor.  Sarah Abbonizio netted 10 points for the Devils.

The third quarter was more of the same with the Devils only shooting 2-of-14 from the field, ending the period at 26 percent overall (10-of-38) with the game level at 27.

The fourth period again was a struggle to make the scoreboard operator work.  USciences held a 32-29 cushion late when Sarah Abbonizio hit a driving layup with 42 seconds to play for a five-point cushion.

The Lightning could not convert on the other end before Abbonizio canned two free throws with 36 seconds to go for a 36-29 contest.

Junior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) scored nine points with McGrogan adding eight for the Lightning (8-17, 6-10 CACC), who shot 29 percent (12-of-42) from the floor.

Abbonizio went on a tear with 22 points and shot 8-for-10 from the line for the Devils (24-2, 16-1), who closed shooting only 27 percent (13-of-49) from the floor and 4-of-19 from three-point range for their 17th straight win.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday to face Dominican (NY) at 1:00 pm.  The men's game between the same schools follows at 3:00 pm.
