Men’s Basketball Wins Eighth Straight, 79-73 at USciences

Clinches First Home CACC Tournament Game Since 2012

Goldey-Beacom once again got solid play from its most formidable players and clinched a home quarterfinal game for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with its eighth straight win, 79-73 at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA.

Both teams played a physical contest with Goldey-Beacom holding a 71-69 edge and less than three minutes left.  That became a five-point cushion when Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) hit two free throws and fellow junior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) added one with 2:09 to play.

Brendan Crawford canned a free throw to bring the Devils within 74-70 with 1:19 remaining before a critical possession for the Lightning.  Johnson capped it when he hit a big layup with 58 seconds to go for a six-point game.

Paddy Casey nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing to bring USciences within 76-73 with 50 seconds to go before the game's biggest possession.  Following a timeout, junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing as the shot clock expired for a 79-73 game with 20 seconds left.

Freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) scored 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting with five 3-pointers to help the Lightning shoot 48 percent (28-of-59) from the field with 11 three-pointers.  Senior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) had 15 points and nine rebounds, Taite and Johnson netted 14 points apiece with Stancil adding 10.

Will Gregorits poured in 19 points, Crawford had 18 and 12 rebounds with Casey adding 15 points for the Devils (13-12, 9-8), who shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom (17-8, 13-3 CACC) holds a one-game lead over Jefferson for first place in the CACC South Division.  No matter what happens the last three games, GBC on February 27 will host its first conference-tournament game since 2012.

USciences shot 57 percent (13-of-23) from the floor in the first half and posted a 20-13 rebounding edge for a 39-36 lead.  Gregorits scored 13 points for the Devils with Livingston netting 14 points for the Lightning and Thompson adding 11.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Dominican (NY) for a 3:00 pm contest.  The women's game is before that at 1:00 pm.
