Women’s Basketball Pulls Away Late in 61-51 Win Over Concordia

Goldey-Beacom had to stave off a strong challenge from Concordia (NY) to record a 61-51 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning in the second quarter outscored the Clippers 14-5 by shooting 6-of-17 from the field and limiting their opponents to only 2-of-16.  Junior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) and sophomore Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) netted five points apiece in that span.

Goldey-Beacom held a 36-20 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter, but Concordia moved to 46-41 with 6:24 remaining to make things interesting.  But the Lightning went on a 12-6 run in just under four minutes to open a 58-47 cushion with 1:28 to play, thanks to a key 3-pointer from freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE).

Turner-Rush closed with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting with Speaks getting 12 and eight rebounds for the Lightning (8-16, 6-9 CACC), who forced the Clippers (3-21, 3-12) to only shoot 28 percent (21-of-74) from the field.  McGrogan ended with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Saundra Cleckley had 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds, Hadiyah Black poured in 13 points with Julianne Wilkinson adding 11 for the Clippers, who were forced into 14 turnovers.

The night also was highlighted by Goldey-Beacom's second annual "Hoop it Up," which welcomed back many alumni for a great night of food, friendship and camaraderie.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Tuesday to face University of the Sciences at 6:00 pm, which precedes the men's 8:00 pm contest.
