Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls, 88-84, to Georgian Court

A huge third quarter for Goldey-Beacom went to waste as it gave up a basket in the final minute for a tough 88-84 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Georgian Court at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning outscored the Lions 31-16 in the third quarter to open a 70-60 lead and appeared headed to a sure victory.  Junior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) scored nine points and senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) added six for GBC, which shot 7-of-15 from the floor in that time and 12-for-14 from the line.

The Lions were within 84-78 with 2:17 remaining before scoring the game's final 10 points.  That run began on Destiny Thompson's three-point play with 2:01 left and she added another layup with 1:27 remaining for an 84-83 contest.

Thompson went to the line with 57 seconds left and made 1-of-2 for an 84-84 tie.  After each team had an empty possession, the Lightning possessed the ball but McGrogan missed a layup and the Lions again had a shot to take the lead.

Jada Atchison, who had been a force all night with her scoring, used her passing for the go-ahead basket.  She drove and fed the ball to Nerea Brajac, who layed it in with 21 seconds left for an 86-84 contest and the Lions' first lead in the final quarter.

GBC went for the tie, but freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) could not convert and Safiyyah Lee hauled in the rebound for Georgian Court.  Lee made two free throws with 7.4 seconds left to ice the contest.

McGrogan, named to the league's Weekly Honor Roll a second straight week, poured in 23 points on 6-of-12 shooting and was 8-for-10 from the line.  Sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) scored 14 points, Turner-Rush had 13 and 10 rebounds with junior Alexis Stubblefield (Woodbridge, VA) adding 12 points for the Lightning (4-5, 0-1).

Turner-Rush also hit three 3-pointers and now is fourth outright in school history with 119 career.

Atchison scored 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting, Brajac netted 17, Thompson had 16 and Lee hauled in 14 rebounds for the Lions (1-7, 1-0).

Goldey-Beacom hits the road Saturday to visit Wilmington (DE) for a 1:00 pm contest.  The men's game between the same schools is at 3:00 pm, also in Newark, DE.
