Women’s Basketball Handed 72-58 Loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas

Goldey-Beacom continued its ultra-busy week by making a trip to upstate New York and leaving Sparkill with a 72-58 loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas.
 
STAC raced to a 38-27 halftime lead thanks to shooting 46 percent (15-of-33) from the floor and a 20-14 rebounding edge.  Zaria Thomas scored 11 points for the Spartans with Emily Preston adding 10.
 
Sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) poured in nine points in the half and senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) added six for Goldey-Beacom.
 
The Lightning were within 54-45 at three-quarter time before the Spartans went on a 10-3 run to open the fourth for a 64-48 lead with 5:55 remaining.  Kellyann Averill shot 3-for-4 from the floor in that span for six points.
 
Turner-Rush ended with 19 points, six rebounds and five 3-pointers for the Lightning (4-4), who were playing their fourth game in seven days.  Speaks poured in 15 points with freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) adding 11.
 
Thomas came off the bench to net 16 points, Chelsea Murphy totaled 12 and eight assists, Preston scored 12 points and Averill recorded 11 for the Spartans (6-1), who shot 60 percent (15-of-25) from the floor in the second half and 52 percent (30-of-58) overall.
 
The Lightning forced 18 turnovers, marking the third straight game and fifth time this season their opponents reached that total.
 
Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday at 6:00 pm for its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener against Georgian Court.  The men's game between the same schools follows at 8:00 pm.
