Goldey-Beacom had an exceptional season opener, coming out strong from the beginning. Goldey-Beacom opened its season with a 69-67 win over Franklin Pierce in Philadelphia, PA.
Goldey-Beacom came out strong from the start taking a 6-0 lead. The Lightning had a 40-26 lead at the end of the first half. Junior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, N.J.) totaled 13 points with three 3-pointers and freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) had 10 points for the Lightning in their first half lead.
Franklin Pierce battled back and had the advantage in the second half of the game with a 41-29 score advantage. That was not enough as Franklin Pierce ended the game on a missed 3-pointer by Hannah Everidege. The 3-pointer was blocked by Round when the clock struck zero. Reetta Saaski (Espoo, Finland) made a free throw to clinch the Lightning's final point to win the game.
Round scored 20 points with five 3-pointers, McGrogan scored 17 and Saaski scored 16 points with seven rebounds for the Lightning.
Izzy Lipininski scored 14 points and shot 100% from the free throw line. Emma Carter also had 14 points for Franklin Pierce.
Goldey-Beacom is back in action on Saturday vs. American International.
