Women’s Basketball Rallies for 67-62 Win Over vs. American International

Goldey-Beacom wore down American International in the fourth quarter and stayed undefeated with a 67-62 victory in Philadelphia, PA.

Down as many as 12 points in the third quarter, GBC was within striking distance at 56-52 with 5:32 left.  Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) then made a layup with 5:02 to play and fellow freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) continued her unbelievable start by canning two free throws with 4:06 remaining for a 56-56 tie.

Ishanna Brown hit once from the stripe to give the Yellow Jackets a 57-56 cushion with 2:21 left.  After an empty possession each way, Round made a tough layup with 1:14 to go for a 58-57 margin and the Lightning's first lead of the game.

Brown missed a layup on the other end and the Lightning got a huge rebound.  Junior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) found herself open in the corner and after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt, she calmly went to the line and hit nothing but net on all three free throws with 45 seconds to play for a 61-57 margin.

Dana Watts hit two foul shots for AIC with 35 seconds left for a 61-59 game, but McGrogan canned two more four seconds later for a 63-59 contest.  After Dominique Boyd made 1-of-2 from the line for AIC with 22 seconds to go, McGrogan hit twice more three seconds later for a 65-60 margin.

Goldey-Beacom in the fourth quarter shot 43 percent (6-of-14) from the floor and made all 11 free throw attempts with McGrogan getting seven.  Round scored 10 points in the quarter with two 3-pointers and McGrogan added seven points for the Lightning, who held the Yellow Jackets to just 36 percent (5-of-14) from the floor.

Round finished with 26 points on 6-of-11 shooting with five 3-pointers and McGrogan poured in 19 points for GBC, which is 2-0 for the first time since the 2012-13 season.  Round averaged 23.0 points during the two games this weekend on 54 percent shooting (13-of-24).

Watts netted 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting with 16 rebounds and Alyssa Guyon scored 18 points for AIC (0-2).

Goldey-Beacom next Thursday plays its home opener against Bridgeport, starting at 6:00 pm.
