Corey Taite Again Stands Out for Men’s Basketball in 97-90 Loss at Adelphi

Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) once again put up big numbers against Adelphi with 36 points, but this time it was not enough as Goldey-Beacom dropped a 97-90 contest in Garden City, NY.

One year after Goldey-Beacom recorded a 113-111 home victory over Adelphi on December 16, the two schools engaged in yet another high-scoring affair.  Taite last year scored a career-best 40 points in that contest.

Adelphi tonight led 52-41 at halftime by shooting 53 percent (17-of-32) from the floor and going 13-for-14 from the line.  Dejavaughn Utley scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the Panthers and Taite netted 13 points for the Lightning.

Down 68-54 with 13:49 left, Goldey-Beacom (1-5) got back into the contest with a 16-8 run over 5 1/2 minutes, closing to 76-70 with 8:23 remaining.  Senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) scored six points for the Lightning with Taite and freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) adding four apiece.

The Lightning then were in an 87-76 hole with 4:50 left before using a 9-2 run to move to 89-85 with 2:29 to play.  Taite netted five points in that span.

Jack Laffey, who scored 45 points in last year's meeting, continued to torch GBC by making a layup with 2:07 to go for a 91-85 contest.  Then for over a minute, the teams lost their offensive touch and it remaining a six-point game.  That was until the Lightning's defense collapsed on the perimeter shooters and Oswald Parker III was open for a dunk, giving the Panthers (5-2) an eight-point cushion with 46 seconds left.

Taite came back on the other end and hit a quick 3-pointer to make it 93-88 with 43 seconds left.  GBC got the ball back after Utley's turnover, but quickly gave it back on Taite's offensive foul with 29 seconds left that all but ended things.

Taite, who scored 23 points in the second half, overall shot 14-for-15 from the line during a game-high 37 minutes.  Sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ), who netted 30 points in last year's encounter, tonight had 17 and nine rebounds with Johnson netting 14 points to help the Lightning shoot 45 percent (16-of-37) from the field.

Utley was a force with 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting as the Panthers hit 52 percent (17-of-33) from the floor.  Laffey netted 21 points, Parker scored 13 with Nick Cambio adding 10 and 11 rebounds.

Goldey-Beacom is home next Tuesday against Georgian Court as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The women's game starts at 6:00 pm and the men go at 8:00 pm.
