Women’s Basketball Dealt 77-58 Loss at New York Tech



Goldey-Beacom endured a tough first quarter and, despite its strong play the rest of the contest, could not overcome it for a 77-58 loss at New York Tech in Old Westbury, NY.
 
New York Tech came out strong in the opening quarter, gaining a 19-9 lead by shooting 55 percent (6-of-11) from the floor.  Meg Knollmeyer and Shalie Frierson each scored seven points in the period for the Bears.
 
Knollmeyer recorded a double-double in the first half with 10 points and 10 rebounds, lifting the Bears to a 31-18 lead at the break.  NYIT in the second quarter increased its lead despite Goldey-Beacom's defense forcing it to shoot 27 percent (4-of-15) from the field in that span.
 
Both teams in the third quarter displayed an offensive explosion with Goldey-Beacom scoring 23 points, closing to 53-41.  Freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) scored seven points in the period and senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) added six for the Lightning, who shot 67 percent (10-of-15) from the field in that time.
 
The Lightning continued to battle throughout, but the Bears scored nine straight points over two minutes to open their biggest lead at 69-49 with 4:07 remaining.  Corinn Baggs scored five points in that time for NYIT.
 
Freshman Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) had nine points and seven rebounds with Turner-Rush, Round and sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) also tallying nine points for the Lightning (3-2).  Freshman Lydia Goolsby (Portsmouth, VA) hauled in seven rebounds for GBC, which shot 42 percent (24-of-57) from the field and forced 17 turnovers.
 
Frierson poured in 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, Knollmeyer had 14 and 15 rebounds with Baggs netting 14 points for the Bears (6-1), who shot 46 percent (26-of-57) from the floor with eight 3-pointers for their fourth straight victory.
 
Turner-Rush moved into 16th place on the school's career scoring list, now standing at 677 points.
 
Goldey-Beacom this Tuesday continues its busy week by finally playing its home opener.  The contest against Lincoln (PA) begins at 6:00 pm.
