Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Dealt 77-73 Loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas

Goldey-Beacom made a furious comeback late with a chance to tie the game, only to be handed a 77-73 loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, NY.

Goldey-Beacom, which trailed by as many as 40-28 in the first half, only was down 42-38 at the break thanks to shooting 43 percent (12-of-28) from the floor and forcing STAC into 12 turnovers.  Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) netted 10 points in the half and junior Dwayne Dixon (Newark, NJ) added nine.

The Spartans reeled off 11 straight points midway through the second half and looked in control, opening a 64-52 lead with 8:40 remaining.  Osbel Caraballo scored six points in that spurt.

Things did not look good with the Spartans ahead 72-58 with 4:55 to go, but no one told the Lightning.  The visitors went on a 13-2 run that was aided by Taite's six points to get within 74-71 with 35 seconds remaining.

That run ended when senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) hit a 3-pointer that danced around the rim and finally dropped for a one-possession contest.

GBC then forced a turnover when sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) tied up Caraballo, forcing a held ball with the visitors owning the possession arrow.  The Lightning had a great look to tie, but freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) saw his three-point attempt miss the mark.

Louis Griffith knocked down two free throws for STAC with 8.4 seconds left for a 76-71 contest.

Taite ended with 19 points and now has 1,296 for his career, moving into third place in program history.  He shot 9-for-9 from the line to go with amassing three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Dixon poured in 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting with eight rebounds and Livingston added 14 points to go with seven rebounds, six assists and five steals for Goldey-Beacom (0-3), which shot 43 percent (26-of-60) from the floor.

Caraballo poured in 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting with Sekou Cisse netting 18 off the bench for the Spartans (3-0), who entered ranked fifth in the latest D2SIDA East Region Poll.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Bridgeport for a 7:00 pm contest.  Please note it is our third annual "Legacy Night" and we invite many of our alumni to attend.
