Men’s Basketball Electrifies Crowd in 104-87 Win Over Bridgeport

Goldey-Beacom saw six players score in double figures and got its first victory of the season in a big way, 104-87 over Bridgeport at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom led most of the way before a raucous home crowd and was looking for a big spurt to finally put away things.  It got it in the form of a 26-13 run over nine minutes, receiving nine points from senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) for a 97-80 lead with 2:33 left.

That was part of a second half in which the Lightning were not going to be denied, shooting 53 percent (16-of-30) from the floor with six 3-pointers and a 23-17 rebounding edge.  Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) scored 15 points in the half and sophomore Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) added nine.

Taite once again electrified the crowd with 23 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two 3-pointers.  His six field goals now put him second in school history with 409 career.

Freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) had 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench, Livingston recorded 13 and eight, sophomore Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) amassed 13 and seven with six assists, senior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) netted 12 points and Johnson added 11 for GBC, which shot 54 percent (34-of-63) with 13 three-pointers and a 43-35 rebounding edge.

In a challenging schedule against the elite, Goldey-Beacom (1-3) was playing its fourth regionally ranked team in as many contests to open the campaign.  Bridgeport (3-1) is second in the D2SIDA East Region.

D'Vonne Trumbo scored 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting and Bakary Camara added 13 for the Purple Knights, who shot 42 percent (28-of-67) from the field but committed 20 turnovers.

The game was part of the College's third annual "Legacy Night," its rebranding of Homecoming Weekend in which many Goldey-Beacom alums attended for a night of food, comradery and basketball.

Goldey-Beacom next Tuesday is on the road to face the District of Columbia for a 7:00 pm contest.
