Men’s Basketball Dealt 104-88 Season-Opening Loss at Bentley

Goldey-Beacom opened its season in New England and could not withstand a big second-half run by Bentley for a 104-88 loss in Waltham, MA.

The Lightning hung around with the Falcons most of the contest, only trailing 73-64 with 8:04 remaining.  But Bentley scored the next 13 points to open an 86-64 cushion with 5:37 left thanks to six points from Ryan Richmond and four from Jordan Mello-Klein.

Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) began his sophomore campaign solidly with 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting and four 3-pointers for the Lightning (0-1).  Freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) netted 15 points, senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) scored 13 and senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) added 10.

Taite, the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year as well as a first team all-region pick in both the NABC and CCA, moved into fourth place in team history with 388 career field goals and fourth outright with 168 career steals.

Colton Lawrence had 24 points and 11 rebounds to pace all five starters in double-figure points for Bentley (1-0).  Ryan netted 21 points, Mello-Klein scored 14, Chris Hudson amassed 12 and Zach Gilpin added 11 for the Falcons, who shot 27-for-31 from the foul line.

Goldey-Beacom's second contest in Waltham takes place Sunday against sixth-ranked Saint Anselm.  Game time is 3:00 pm.
