Men’s Basketball Rallies for 85-76 Triumph at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom eradicated a double-figure deficit in the opening half and notched a big Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road triumph, 85-76, at Caldwell in Caldwell, NJ.

Down 11 points on three different occasions in the first half, Goldey-Beacom used a 21-3 run in just over six minutes to incredibly open a 34-27 cushion with 1:25 left in the period.  Senior Isiah Graves (Atlantic City, NJ) scored five points in that spurt and ended it with a layup, capping a run in which his unit shot 7-of-11 from the floor and forced six turnovers.

Taite ended with 12 points in the opening half on 5-of-8 shooting to help the Lightning shoot 41 percent (12-of-29) from the floor and open a 34-32 lead.  Vaughn Covington poured in nine points for the Cougars.

GBC held a 71-67 lead with 3:15 left after Caldwell's Zay Jennings canned a 3-pointer, but the visitors took over from there.  After junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) hit a layup, senior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) continued his mammoth day from the foul line by making two with 1:58 to play for a 75-67 margin.

Eric Johnson-Alford made one of two from the line with 1:50 left to bring the Cougars within 75-68.  GBC looked for an answer and got it with 1:40 to play, when Thompson converted an alley-oop dunk from Taite for a nine-point game.

Goldey-Beacom took advantage of Caldwell's frontcourt being in foul trouble, shooting 58 percent (19-for-33) from two-point range for 50 percent (26-of-52) overall.  That aggressiveness also helped get the visitors to the line, where they went 26-for-31.

Thompson was the biggest benefactor from the charity stripe, going a career-best 12-for-14 as part of his 18 points.  Taite netted a game-high 20 points, junior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) poured in 16 and freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) added 10 for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom (11-8, 7-3 CACC), which has won five of its last six games overall, remains in a three-way tie for first place in the CACC South Division with University of the Sciences and Jefferson.  GBC also has won five of its last eight games vs. Caldwell.

Covington netted 14 points with Ruud Lutterman adding 13 before he fouled out for the Cougars (8-11, 5-5), who shot 48 percent (24-of-50) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom is off until Saturday, when it visits Post for a 3:00 pm contest.  The women's game between the same schools is at 1:00 pm.
