Game Recap: Softball |

Heroes Abound for Softball in Sweep vs. USciences

Sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) lifted the go-ahead home run in game one, junior Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) pitched another gem in game two and senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) reached 100 career hits for Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep, 9-7 and 6-1, of University of the Sciences at Midway Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Things looked bleak for the Lightning (7-15, 6-4 CACC) in game one when Gina Pustizzi lofted a go-ahead home run in the top of the sixth inning, giving the Devils a 7-6 lead.  But sophomore Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) cracked a leadoff homer in the sixth for her first career long ball and Murphy went yard with a two-run blast for her third career home run.

Sophomore Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ) drove in three runs as she, Murphy, Doyle and junior Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) all had two hits.  Giampolo (3-5) struck out five over seven innings, permitting seven runs – five earned – and nine hits.

Kaitlyn Gaynor struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings and got a no-decision for USciences.  Alexandria Jackson (0-4) gave up the last three runs over an inning.

King in game two went 3-for-3 that included her first career home run and she became the 26th player in school history to reach triple figures in hits.

Davis lined a two-run single in the second to open the scoring and then drew a bases-loaded walk in the four for a 3-1 contest.  Junior Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) lined a two-run single later in the frame before King's solo blast in the sixth.

Doyle (3-6) once again pitched great and just missed tossing a shutout.  She tied her career best with seven strikeouts, surrendering just one run and four hits over seven frames.

Kyla Colburn (3-5) struck out nine, but coughed up six runs and nine hits over six innings for the Devils (3-17, 2-8).

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Sunday to visit Shippensburg for a 1:30 pm doubleheader.
