Softball Clinches CACC Tournament Berth With Sweep at Bloomfield

Junior Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) and freshman Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) each rapped key hits, helping Goldey-Beacom clinch a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a doubleheader sweep at Bloomfield, 1-0 and 6-5, in Bloomfield, NJ.

A great pitchers' duel was on tap in game one with Lightning sophomore Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ) battling Kirsten Wilson.  Giampolo (7-7) struck out three over seven innings, yielding just three hits for her third shutout of the year and 11th career win to put her in a tie for 13th place in school history.  Wilson struck out 12 over seven frames, permitting one run and three hits with three walks.

GBC got the much-needed win by going ahead in the seventh inning.  Junior Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) drew a one-out walk and took second on a single from senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE).  Brandle was thrown out trying to steal third, but King advance to second on the play and then stole third.  Doyle then came through with a clutch RBI single.

Sophomore Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) had the only other hit for the Lightning.

With game two tied 2-2 entering the fifth, Goldey-Beacom put up four runs to open a 6-2 lead.  Senior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) notched a one-out RBI single that put the visitors ahead for good and Goshorn broke open things with a big three-run triple.

Bloomfield got three runs in the bottom of the frame to close to 6-5.  Lauren Nickerson lined a ground-rule double, Mariah Frazier drew a bases-loaded walk and Raylene Uribe capped it with an RBI single.

Giampolo settled down, allowing just one baserunner over the final two innings for a huge sweep.

Millville, NJ sophomore Alexa Calareso (3-7) came on in relief to get the win, recording a strikeout over 1 1/3 innings and permitting three runs and four hits.  Giampolo allowed just one hit over 2 2/3 innings for her second save of the year and sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) rapped three hits.

Stephanie Miller gave up six runs – five earned – and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings for the Bears (20-21, 10-14 CACC).  Uribe and Nickerson each amassed three hits.

GBC (15-29, 13-11) sits fifth in the conference with two games left and can be anywhere from the fifth to the seventh seed for the league tournament, which starts Thursday at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom ends conference play Sunday at Concordia (NY) in a 1:00 pm doubleheader.
