Softball Clinches Fifth Place with Split at Concordia (NY)

The amazing season that is Goldey-Beacom's 2017 softball campaign saw the regular slate end with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader split at Concordia (NY), winning the second game 6-3 in eight innings after a 3-0 loss in the opener in Bronxville, NY.

GBC (16-30, 14-12 CACC), picked to finish 14th in the league's preseason coaches' poll, ends the campaign in fifth place and is headed to the conference tournament.  The Lightning will battle fourth-seeded Wilmington (DE) on Thursday, May 4 at noon on the campus of Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom in game two got single runs in the second through fourth innings for a 3-0 lead.  Freshman Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, NJ) lined an RBI single in the second, sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) cross home on a wild pitch in the third and junior Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) was just getting warmed up with an RBI single in the fourth.

However, the Clippers (7-21, 6-16) answered with three run in the fourth for a 3-3 tie.  Allison Beltz, MacKenna Powell and Cassidy Gorgo all had RBI in that span.

But Doyle came through again, one day after her seventh-inning RBI single helped GBC upend Bloomfield.  Today, her eighth-inning double scored junior Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) to give the visitors a 4-3 lead.

Freshman Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) notched an RBI grounder and Murphy added a run-scoring groundout for the final.

Doyle (6-14) went all eight innings, permitting three runs and 11 hits.  She, Murphy, Brandle and Gatto all had two hits.

Gorgo ended with four hits and Shayla Peterson allowed three runs – one earned – and five hits over four innings.

Concordia in game one grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on Sarah Ross' RBI single.  Carly Mertens added a run-scoring single in the fifth and Peterson lifted a sacrifice fly later in the frame for a 3-0 margin.

East Windsor, NJ sophomore Alyssa Giampolo (6-8) struck out three over six innings, but surrendered three runs and seven hits.  Murphy ended the day with two hits.

Ross (2-10) amassed six strikeouts over seven innings, yielding just four hits.
