Softball Stuns No. 20 Caldwell With Doubleheader Split

In a 180-degree turn that seemed tough to belief for most who witnessed, Goldey-Beacom ran away from 20th-ranked Caldwell in game two for a 10-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory after it fell victim to Sydney Ponto's perfect game in a 4-0 loss.

Down 1-0 entering the last of the first inning in game two, Goldey-Beacom erupted for seven runs by sending 13 batters to the plate and getting the first eight to reach base.  Senior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) dropped a perfect RBI squeeze bunt, sophomore Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) lined an RBI single, senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) crushed a three-run double and junior Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) added an RBI single.

The margin was 7-2 entering the last of the fifth when the game reached an unexpected conclusion.  With two outs and no runners on base, freshman Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) singled and Mao doubled her to third.  Davis followed with an RBI single and junior Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) lowered the curtain with a two-run double for a mercy-rule win.

Davis ended with three hits as part of the Lightning's 13 with Conway and Brandle getting two apiece.  Millville, NJ sophomore Alexa Calareso (2-5) permitted two runs and five hits over five innings.

Lauren Frye ended with two hits for the Cougars.  Alexa Toner (3-2) did not record an out in giving up seven runs – five earned – and five hits.

Game one belonged to Ponto, who struck out nine and looked untouchable.  She also got nine groundball outs, three flyouts and only once faced a 3-and-0 count.

Carly Testa opened the scoring in the first with an RBI triple and then scored on an error.  Katie Nichols crossed home on a wild pitch in the second and Frye added an RBI single later in the frame.

Frye, Nichols and Marisa Monasseri all had two hits for the Cougars (28-11, 19-1 CACC), who had their 33-game regular-season conference winning streak snapped.

Tower City, PA junior Kylie Doyle (4-11) gave up four runs – three earned – and 10 hits over seven innings for the Lightning.

GBC (10-24, 8-8) sits tied for sixth in the CACC with 10 games remaining.  The top eight teams in the league go to the conference tournament.

Goldey-Beacom is home Thursday against Holy Family, starting at 2:30 pm.
