Women’s Tennis Opens Spring With 9-0 Blanking of Shippensburg

Goldey-Beacom ended this match like it has its previous nine this season.  With a win.
 
GBC, ranked third in the East Region and off to its best start in school history, needed just two hours to cruise through Shippensburg in a 9-0 victory at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, DE.
 
The Lightning (10-0) ran through the doubles by dropping just three games for an early 3-0 lead.  Seniors Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) and Francesca Beg (Westbury, England), ranked 10th in the East Region according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), rolled to an 8-2 win at first doubles over Catherine Miller and Gabbie Binder.  Junior Raquel Morais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and freshman Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) recorded an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles vs. Emilie Luttman and Kaylin Gallagher with freshmen Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) and Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) getting an 8-0 victory at third doubles over Daisy Rundio and Hannah Coath.
 

Sengl and Beg moved to 10-0 as a team this season, all at first doubles, with Garcia Valle and Silvia Hortelano Pey improving to 9-0.
 
Sengl got the first singles win, needing roughly 30 minutes for a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at fourth singles over Gallagher.  It was Sengl's 41st singles win, moving her into a tie for third in school history with Melanie Bonomo (2009-13), and she now is 10-0 this season.
 
Anna Hortelano Pey, ranked 17th in the East Region, notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Miller, Beg posted a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at second singles over Binder and Garcia Valle notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles vs. Luttman.  Silvia Hortelano Pey got a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Rundio at fifth singles with sophomore Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany) winning, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles over Coath for Shippensburg (1-5).
 
Silvia Hortelano Pey moves to 10-0 in singles and Garcia Valle goes to 9-0.
 
Today marks the Lightning's first match after winning their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title and clinching their sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament.
 
Goldey-Beacom is off until March 22, when it travels to West Chester for a 3:30 pm match.
