Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball’s Winning Streak Hits a Dozen in Triumph Over Post

Goldey-Beacom built a sizable halftime lead and then withstood a late run for its 12th straight victory, 85-63 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play over Post at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC was in prime form as it once again looked to extend its school-record winning streak.  That truly was never in doubt, racing to a 49-32 halftime lead by shooting 63 percent (20-of-32) from the field with five 3-pointers and 15-of-22 from two-point range.  Junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) again was a prominent figure with 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting, Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) netted 13 and fellow senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) added 10.

The Eagles tried to make a game of it with an 18-9 run early in the second half to move to 60-52 with 8:16 left.  Naasir Williams scored six points in that time and Matt Mareno ended it with two free throws.

But the Lightning found the next gear with a 13-2 run in just over three minutes for a 73-54 cushion with 5:05 to play.  Senior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) scored five points in that spurt to help GBC shoot 6-of-7 from the field.

Thompson continued his mammoth play in the post with 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting to go with eight rebounds and five dunks.  He now is averaging 15.8 points over his last 12 games.

Williams had 19 points and eight rebounds, Swint netted 17 points and Ridgeway-Higgs added 15 for the Lightning, who shot 55 percent (36-of-66) for the game with seven 3-pointers.

Levy Gillespie scored 12 points, Mareno had 11 and nine rebounds with Savion Boissard contributing 11 points for the Eagles, who shot 45 percent (26-of-58) from the field with 22 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom (19-3, 13-2 CACC) maintains its 1 1/2 game lead over Wilmington (11-3) and Philadelphia U. (11-3) atop the CACC South Division.

A big test lies ahead next Saturday when Goldey-Beacom visits North Division-leading Bloomfield at 3:00 pm.  Both teams already have clinched a spot in the CACC Tournament.
