Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Winning Streaks End For Men’s Basketball In Wild Loss at Bloomfield

In an intense battle between two first-place teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Goldey-Beacom gave up a 3-pointer from Nick Davidson with 0.5 seconds left in a crushing 78-76 loss at Bloomfield in Bloomfield, NJ.

Bloomfield held a 69-58 lead with 6 1/2 minutes left before GBC went on a 10-2 run to close to 71-68 with 4:31 left.  Senior Sameen Swint (Sicklerville, NJ) scored seven points in that spurt, including a 3-pointer to cap it.

A layup each way put the score at 73-70 before Davidson hit once from the line to give the Bears a four-point cushion with 1:56 remaining.  Goldey-Beacom senior Nick Lawson (Woodbury, NJ) was summoned from the bench for the first time all game and brought his squad within 74-72 by canning a jumper with 1:46 to play.

Rakwan Kelly missed a jumper for the Bears and the Lightning now had a chance to tie or take the lead.  They settled for the tie with sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) burying two free throws with 1:26 to go, making it 74-74.

Chiedozie Akawuaku hit once from the stripe for the Bears with 1:10 left for a 75-74 game and now the Lightning had an opportunity for their first lead in the second half.  They got it when sophomore Rachid Shimou (Piscataway, NJ) converted a layup with 58 seconds left for a 76-75 cushion.

Bloomfield then almost coughed away the game when Marcus Fleming committed a crucial offensive foul with 48 seconds left.  GBC then had the ball going for a two-possession game when Lawson missed a 3-pointer, but Shimou grabbed a huge offensive rebound and was fouled with 22 seconds to play.

It was a double-bonus situation and still be a one-possession game no matter what Shimou did at the line.  But he missed both free throws and now the Bears could go for the win.

Davidson was the one who came through by receiving a pass from Ahmid Williams and nailing the go-ahead bucket.  GBC had one more chance, but Shimou misfired on a 3-pointer as time expired.

Senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) scored 17 points, Taite netted 16 and senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) added 10 for the Lightning, who shot 45 percent (29-of-64) from the field and had three players foul out.

Davidson's shot capped his 25-point day with Kelly and Ignacio Diez getting 13 apiece for the Bears, who shot 42 percent (26-of-63) from the floor.

GBC (19-4, 13-3 CACC) saw its 12-game winning streak and seven-game road winning streak – both school records – snapped.  It now is tied with Philadelphia U. (13-3) for first place in the CACC South Division and both are one game ahead of Wilmington (12-4).

Bloomfield (18-7, 13-3) holds a 2 1/2 game cushion over Dominican (10-5) atop the CACC North Division.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against University of the Sciences at 8:00 pm.  The women's game precedes it at 6:00 pm.
