Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Falls to Mount Olive and Catawba

Another tough test of softball was on tap for Goldey-Beacom, which was dealt a 12-2 loss by Mount Olive and an 8-3 setback by Catawba in Salisbury, NC.

GBC grabbed a 1-0 lead on Mount Olive in the top of the first when senior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) doubled to bring home sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE).  After the Trojans grabbed a 2-1 lead, senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) in the third brought Mao home on a sacrifice fly for a tie game.

Mount Olive grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Caitlin Ewers lined a two-run single down the right-field line for a 4-2 contest.  The game ended via run rule in the sixth when Callie Ferrell launched a three-run homer.

Mao closed with two hits and Millville, NJ sophomore Alexa Calareso permitted four runs – three earned – and three hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Ewers, Ferrell and Alexis Hobson all had two hits for the Trojans (7-6).  Ewers gave up two runs and four hits over six innings with three strikeouts.

Against Catawba, Goldey-Beacom drew to a 1-1 tie in the third when Murphy scored on a wild pitch.  But the Indians plated four runs in the bottom of the frame for a 5-1 cushion, keyed by Kristen Stinnard's two-run single.

The Lightning (1-5) looked for a rally in the seventh and cut into the deficit with senior Amber Wroble (Mechanicsville, MD) lacing a two-run double to left, scoring King and sophomore Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE).

Calareso was charged with five runs – four earned – and 10 hits over five innings.

Stinnard record three hits and Kaylee Cook allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings with three strikeouts for Catawba (3-8).

Goldey-Beacom is off until March 4, when it faces Bridgeport for a noon doubleheader in the home opener.
