Softball Opens Season With Split at Virginia State



Goldey-Beacom opened the 2017 season with a 22-14 win in nine innings over Virginia State before a heartbreaking 12-11 loss in the nightcap in Ettrick, VA.
 
Senior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) in game one had four hits and three runs, Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) recorded three hits and three RBI with fellow sophomore Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) and freshman Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) getting two hits apiece for the Lightning (1-1).
 
Sophomore Alexa Calareso (Millville, NJ) got the victory in relief for GBC, which scored eight runs in the ninth inning for the win.
 
Goshorn again had a solid outing in game two, closing with three hits to go with three runs.  Davis, junior Autumn Hollis (Elkton, MD) and freshman Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, NJ) recorded two hits apiece for the Lightning, which surrendered six runs in the last of the seventh inning.
 
Calareso (1-1) was saddled with the loss to even her mark.
 
Box scores are not available from Virginia State University at this time.
 
Goldey-Beacom is in action Saturday against Lenoir-Rhyne at 11:00 am in Hickory, NC and then will play a neutral-site game vs. Mount Olive after 3:00 pm.
