Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bruno Becomes Career Assists Leader in Women’s Basketball's Loss to USciences

Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) became the school's career assists leader, but Goldey-Beacom could not find its shooting touch in the second half and was handed a 55-49 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss by University of the Sciences at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning held a 27-25 halftime lead, but the Devils came out smoking in the second half with an 11-2 run to open a 36-29 cushion with 6:30 left in the third quarter.  Sarah Abbonizio scored six points in that span and ended in with a layup for USciences, which shot 5-of-7 from the field in that span.

GBC was within 46-41 early in the fourth quarter before USciences scored the next five points to open a 51-41 lead with 6:06 remaining.  Laura Trisch delivered the key bucket in that span by canning a huge 3-pointer.

The Lightning closed to 51-47 with 1:47 on a layup from junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA), but empty possessions followed and the home side could not take advantage.  Abbonizio ended things by canning two free throws with eight seconds left for a 53-47 margin and give USciences the CACC South Division title.

Bruno ended with five assists and now has 421 career in just under three seasons.  She entered the contest tied with Devonne Richardson (2009-13) tied for the team lead.

Bryson had 12 points and nine rebounds with Bruno getting 11 and six for the Lightning, who shot 34 percent (20-of-59) from the floor.

Abbonizio and Alex Thomas scored 12 points apiece with Colleen Walsh getting nine and 14 rebounds for the Devils (22-5, 15-3 CACC), who shot 36 percent (18-of-50) from the floor and overcame 15 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom (15-11, 11-6 CACC) now sits tied with Chestnut Hill (11-6) for second place in the CACC South.  The two play each other in the final game of the season next Tuesday with one of those schools getting a home game in the CACC quarterfinals next Saturday.

Before that, Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday for Senior Night against Wilmington (DE) at 8:00 pm.  Please note GBC will host "Hoop it Up" for our alumni and parents of student-athletes during the game.  To RSVP your attendance, please RSVP the alumni office at alumni@gbc.edu.
