Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Dealt Tough 61-59 Loss by Wilmington (DE)

A great battle with local rival Wilmington (DE) produced yet another exciting contest, but Goldey-Beacom was on the wrong end of the ledger in a 61-59 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC looked great with 5:20 to go, holding a 56-49 lead.  Wilmington inched closer with Jermaine Head netting a jumper and Miles Gillette adding a layup with 3:46 to go for a three-point game.

After GBC senior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) made a free throw for a 57-53 game, Head's jumper with 2:56 to play cut the margin to two.  Thompson then committed a turnover and Nick Richards continued his torrid outing by making a layup with 90 seconds remaining for a tie game.

Head canned two free throws with 54 seconds to play, but GBC junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) hit a crazy layup while getting fouled with 36 seconds to go for a 59-59 tie.  He missed the ensuing free throw and the Wildcats had a chance for the lead.

Following a timeout, Richard was called upon to put Wilmington ahead.  He drove through the lane and banked home a jumper in the paint with 7.3 seconds to play for a 61-59 game.

GBC did not call time out and rushed the ball up court.  Junior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) had a great three-point look from the right wing, but it bounced off the rim.  Freshman Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) tried to tip it in at the buzzer, but it would not fall to end the Lightning's four-game winning streak.

Taite ended with 10 points to move into 15th place in school history with 798, dished two assists to go into a ninth-place tie at 195, nailed two free throws to move into sixth at 208 and notched four steals to go into sixth at 126.

Thompson had 13 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season for the Lightning (4-5, 1-1 CACC), who shot 35 percent (23-of-65) from the field.

Richards netted 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting, Gillette had 16 points and nine rebounds with Head getting 16 points for the Wildcats (6-3, 2-0), who shot 44 percent (23-of-52) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom is back on the road Wednesday to visit Pace for a 7:00 pm contest in Pleasantville, NY.
