Men’s Basketball Dealt Crushing 70-65 Loss at Pace

Goldey-Beacom saw another second-half lead slip away and was handed a tough 70-65 loss at Pace in Pleasantville, NY.

Goldey-Beacom in the opening half scored 11 straight points in roughly 2 1/2 minutes to open a 25-15 lead with 3:50 remaining.  Freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) netted five points in that span for the Lightning, who shot 3-of-4 from the field in that time with all being 3-pointers.

GBC owned a 31-22 halftime margin by canning eight 3-pointers and forcing Pace into 11 turnovers.  Junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) and sophomore Justin Salem (Mahwah, NJ) each poured in nine points for the half.

The Setters closed to 41-38 just six minutes into the second half before the Lightning went on a 15-7 run spanning 5 1/2 minutes for a 56-45 cushion with 8:26 remaining.  Salem netted five points in that span to help his team shoot 6-of-11 from the floor.

Pace rallied again, using a 17-7 spurt over six minutes to unbelievably close to 63-62 with 2:06 left.  Luke McLaughlin and Brandon Jacobs each netted four points in that span.

Freshman Tevin Service (Union, NJ) hit two free throws for GBC with 1:47 remaining for a 65-62 game before Pace's Austin Gilbertson drilled a long jumper 15 seconds later for a one-point game.

After a turnover, Pace got the ball back looking for its first lead since late in the opening half.  Gilbertson was called upon from almost the same spot near the right corner, this time stepping behind the three-point line and hitting with 59 seconds left for a 67-65 Setters cushion.

After GBC committed a 10-second violation, Pace looked to extend the lead.  Ray Montilus rebounded his own miss in the paint and was fouled, converting both free throws with 20 seconds to play for a 69-65 contest.

The Lightning rushed the ball up court looking for a quick basket, but Service missed a 3-pointer before Montilus grabbed the rebound.  The latter hit 1-of-2 from the line with 8.8 seconds left for the final.

Taite scored 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting and recorded five assists, moving into sole possession of ninth place in school history with 200.  Salem and junior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) netted 14 points apiece for the Lightning (4-6), who shot 37 percent (21-of-57) from the floor with a season-best 12 three-pointers.

Jacobs poured in 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Greg Poleon added 13 for the Setters (3-9), who shot 52 percent (26-of-50) from the field with 19 turnovers and snapped their five-game skid.

GBC has forced its opponents to commit at least 19 turnovers in all 10 games this season.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday at 6:00 pm against Adelphi.  The women's squad is in action before that at 4:00 pm vs. New York Tech.
