Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Survives Overtime to Upend Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom was forced to put in overtime down by the shore, but in the end saw five of its players score in double figures for a 75-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom in the third quarter outscored Georgian Court 22-8 by shooting 63 percent (10-of-16) from the floor and limiting the home side to just 24 percent (4-of-17).  Senior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) netted five points in that span with Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) and fellow sophomore Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA) adding four apiece for the Lightning, who scored the last eight points of the stanza.

Georgian Court unbelievably used a 25-7 run spanning almost the entire fourth quarter to forge a 60-60 tie with one minute left.  Jess Placher scored nine points in that time on a trio of 3-pointers, including the tying basket, to help her unit shoot 56 percent (10-of-18) from the field in the period.

The Lions had a chance for the lead, but freshman Alanna Speaks (Wilmington, DE) came up big with a huge block of Gemma Mochi's attempt in close with 40 seconds left.  The Lightning also thwarted another opportunity late when Jaelyn Tweedy's 3-pointer in the closing seconds hit off the rim.

Overtime belonged to the Lightning, who scored the first seven points in 86 seconds for a 67-60 lead.  Sophomore Nina Bartlette (Winthrop, MA) capped the spurt with an old-fashioned three-point play.

Georgian Court closed to 69-64 with 2:44 remaining when Placher hit yet another 3-pointer, but McGrogan on the next possession ended things.  Her layup with 2:21 to play gave the Lightning a 71-64 cushion and secured her team's 24th consecutive win against the Lions.

McGrogan simply played great with 12 points and a personal-best 13 rebounds for her first career double-double.  Bryson and Speaks scored 14 points apiece, junior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) poured in 11 with Bartlette adding 10 and eight rebounds for GBC (4-8, 2-1 CACC), which shot 42 percent (28-of-66) from the floor and forced 15 turnovers.

Carna Prokic had 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, Tweedy netted 16 points with Placher adding 15 and four 3-pointers for the Lions (2-8, 0-3), who shot 34 percent (27-of-79) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom led by as many as 12 points in the opening half, but only went into the locker room with a 31-27 lead.  Speaks scored nine points in the half on a trio of 3-pointers, leading the squad to a 14-6 edge in bench points.  Turner-Rush also poured in nine points in the half.

Goldey-Beacom is off until December 30, when it visits Jefferson for a 1:00 pm game.  The men's game between the same teams follows at 3:00 pm.
