Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Corey Taite’s Free Throw Lifts Men’s Hoops to Win at Georgian Court

Junior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) canned a free throw with five seconds remaining, giving Goldey-Beacom a hard-fought 71-70 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph at Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom trailed 51-42 midway through the second half after giving up 17 straight points, but then went on a 23-11 run to open a 65-62 cushion with 2:06 left.  Taite poured in 10 points in that span and freshman Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) added six.

The Lightning were looking to hang on, but Omar Williams had other ideas for the Lions as his 3-pointer with 1:55 left forged a 65-65 tie.  Junior Troy Stancil (Washington, DC) made good on the other end for the Lightning as his two free throws with 1:29 to play gave his side a 67-65 cushion.

The Lions again would not go away.  This time it was Tony Ellington who came through by hitting a baseline jumper as he was fouled with 1:06 to play.  He missed the ensuing free throw and the game remained level at 67.

Goldey-Beacom (6-6, 2-1 CACC) once again looked inside the paint for an opportunity to grab the lead and Stancil delivered, hitting a scoop shot as he was hacked with 40 seconds to go.  His free throw gave the Lightning a 70-67 lead.

Williams again was looked to for the tie and again the Lightning had no answer, only to see his 3-pointer find nylon with 27 seconds to play for a 70-70 deadlock.

Taite then took matters into his own hands.  The reigning CACC Player of the Week was coming off a 40-point game Saturday against Adelphi and it was up to him for the answer.  In driving to the basket, he was fouled by Bryce Council to send him to the line for two shots.

The 77-percent foul shooter missed the first, but drilled the second for his 231st career made free throw that has him fifth in school history.  The Lions (0-11, 0-3) had one final chance, but Caleb Bowser missed a jumper as time expired.

Taite ended with 19 points and was 8-for-11 from the line to give the Lightning their ninth victory over the Lions in as many all-time meetings.  Livingston, picked CACC Rookie of the Week after getting 30 points Saturday, netted 15 points to go with eight rebounds, Stancil scored 14 points and sophomore Justin Salem (Mahwah, NJ) added 11.

Taite moves into 13th place in school history with 872 career points, fifth with 231 free throws, eighth with 205 assists and cracks the top 10 with 101 three-pointers.

Goldey-Beacom forced 19 turnovers, giving the squad at least that number in all 12 games this season.  It entered the contest second in the country with 22.82 forced turnovers per contest.

Juwuan Carter had 15 points and 11 rebounds, Bowser also scored 15 points and Williams added 13 for the Lions, who shot 50 percent (11-of-22) in the second half and 43 percent (23-of-53) overall.

GBC trailed 31-30 at halftime despite Salem scoring 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting with three 3-pointers and his side forcing nine turnovers.  Bowser also poured in 11 points in the half on 4-of-6 shooting.

Goldey-Beacom is off until December 30, when it visits Jefferson for a 3:00 pm game.  The women's game between the same teams is at 1:00 pm.
