Women’s Tennis Clinches Top Seed in CACC Tournament

GBC Secures Top Spot with 5-4 Victory at Concordia (NY)

Goldey-Beacom built on two doubles wins by getting three singles triumphs and clinching the top seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 5-4 victory at Concordia (NY) in Bronxville, NY.
 
The defending conference champion (9-0, 8-0 CACC) was picked to repeat as league winners and took a major step in securing its second straight undefeated fall regular season.  GBC is off to the league semifinals a 10th straight year and will face either fourth-seeded University of the Sciences or fifth-seeded Jefferson on Friday at 10:00 am in Middlebury, CT.
 
It also is the Lightning's 17th consecutive regular season conference win, which includes the final two matches of the 2015 campaign.
 
Sophomore Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Fredrika Regner (Langaryd, Sweden) improved to 14-1 this fall and 9-0 in dual matches with an 8-5 win at second doubles over Angelica Karlsson and Josefina Torres.  Junior Manuela Cornejo (Quito, Ecuador) and sophomore Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) added an 8-5 triumph at No. 3 doubles over Tadi Mrewa and Franziska Putschbach.
 
Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) continued her impressive freshman campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at second singles over Kristel Kalm to go to 11-1 this fall, including 8-0 in dual events.  Hortelano Pey went to 12-2 in singles with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles over Torres with Garcia Valle going to 7-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 win at fifth singles vs. Mrewa.
 
Concordia (10-1, 7-1) is the two seed and also has a bye into the CACC semifinals.  It will play at 1:00 pm on Friday vs. either third-seeded Wilmington (DE) or sixth-seeded Post.
 
The two aforementioned first-round matches will take place at the site of the higher seed.  The final is Saturday at noon in Middlebury, CT.
