Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Drops 70-66 Heartbreaker to Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom looked well on its way to scoring a big victory against a quality opponent, only to be overtaken in a tough 70-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Caldwell at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning owned a 64-55 lead with 6:53 remaining on a layup from junior Britani Bryson (Hampton, VA) and was in the driver's seat.  The Cougars got a layup from Maura Kelty and a 3-pointer from Antoinette Pilla to make it 64-60 before junior Margherita Giubilei (Cesena, Italy) hit a layup for the home side with 4:46 left for a six-point game.

But that would be Goldey-Beacom's final points as Caldwell ended on a 10-0 run.  The spurt began with 3:10 left when Sharell Sanders canned a 3-pointer for a 66-63 game.  A GBC turnover led to another Caldwell possession in which Kelty rebounded Sanders' miss and hit a layup with 2:35 to go for a 66-65 contest.

The Lightning then were forced into another turnover and Andie Lennon gave her side the lead for good, nailing a 3-pointer with 2:08 remaining for a 68-66 game.  After a series of misses and the score unchanged, GBC had the ball in the closing moments looking to tie or take the lead.  Junior Lexi Bruno (Millville, NJ) had the ball in her hands, but she missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key with eight seconds to go.

Goldey-Beacom then was forced to foul three times as it was not in the penalty.  Pilla was fouled on the last with two seconds left and she canned two free throws for the final.

Sophomore Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) poured in a career-best 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go with five 3-pointers, Bryson had 17 points and 14 rebounds for her eighth double-double this season with Bruno netting 16 points for the Lightning (9-7, 4-2 CACC).

Bruno now had 460 career field goals, moving into a tie with Jacinda Jones (2007-08, 2009-13) for fourth place in team history.

The Lightning's defense did a great job in holding Kristen Drogsler, the region's second leading scorer at 21.3 points per game, to just eight points but could not contain others.  Pilla netted 20 points with six 3-pointers, Lennon scored 15 points, Kelty poured in 13 and Sanders added 10 for the Cougars (11-3, 6-0), who just dropped out of the national poll and entered four in the East Region according to D2SIDA.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday at Concordia (NY) as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.  The women's game begins at 1:00 pm, followed by the men's 3:00 pm contest.
