Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Ridgeway-Higgs’ Heroics Lead Men’s Basketball to 84-82 Win Over Caldwell

Senior Parris Ridgeway-Higgs (New Castle, DE) scored a career-best 22 points, including two free throws with five seconds left to give Goldey-Beacom an 84-82 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Caldwell at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC led by as many as 66-55 with 10 minutes left and then owned an 81-72 cushion with 2:48 to go.  But Caldwell would not go away, scoring the next seven points to close to 81-79 with 44 seconds left, capped by Vaughn Covington's free throw.

Sophomore Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) was fouled with 27 seconds to go and made one from the stripe to give the Lightning an 82-79 lead.  The Cougars immediately went for the tie and it was Covington who got senior Shakeem Wilson (Brooklyn, NY) to foul on a pump fake to draw three free throws.

Covington drilled all of them with 18 seconds to go for the game's first tie since 53-53 with 13:59 remaining.

GBC now had a chance for the win and Ridgeway-Higgs took control.  But he got some help when Ahmad Harrison committed an off-the-ball foul to give the Lightning an easier time.  Ridgeway-Higgs canned both for an 84-82 contest.

The Lightning's defense then went into lockdown mode and did not allow a shot on the other end for their eighth victory in their last nine outings.

Ridgeway-Higgs was unstoppable in breaking his personal best of 21 points accomplished January 25, 2014 at Felician and February 2, 2015 at Georgian Court.  He now is tied with Ronson Burton (2000-02) for 16th place in school history with 663 points and moved into sixth with 208 career assists, surpassing current assistant coach Jarrel Lane (2013-16).

Junior Dante Thompson (Coram, NY) had 19 points and eight rebounds with senior Riyan Williams (Dunkirk, MD) also getting 19 points for the Lightning (9-3, 4-2 CACC), who shot 56 percent (15-of-27) from the field in the second half and 48 percent (29-of-60) overall.

Zay Jennings scored 19 points, Ruud Lutterman had 17 and nine rebounds with Derek Dorn adding 16 points for the Cougars (9-5, 4-2), who shot 51 percent (28-of-55) overall but self-imploded with 21 turnovers that included 14 in the opening half.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday plays at Concordia (NY) as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm contest.
