Women’s Tennis Remains Perfect With 9-0 Victory at Caldwell

It was yet another solid day for Goldey-Beacom's women's tennis team as its perfect record in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference stayed that way with a 9-0 victory at Caldwell in Caldwell, NJ.

The Lightning owned an early 3-0 lead with two doubles victories and a forfeit win at third doubles. Seniors Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) and Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) notched an 8-4 win at first doubles over Valeria Otarola and Rebecca Ryan before sophomore Manuela Cornejo (Waldbronn, Germany) and junior Raquel Morais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) posted an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 doubles over Janis Jimenez and Shannon Donaldson.

Freshman Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) recorded an 6-2, 6-4 win at first singles over Otarola, Beg notched a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 singles over Ryan and freshman Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles over Jimenez.

With only three courts available and the tie decided, the remaining matches were played in a pro set. Sengl got an 8-2 win over Donaldson at fourth singles, freshman Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) rolled to an 8-0 victory over Claudia Romano at No. 5 singles and the last singles match was forfeited.

Sengl's victory was her 34th singles triumph, moving her into sole possession of seventh place in school history.

GBC is 3-0 in the conference for the fourth time in the last five years, is 3-0 overall as well and is tied in winning percentage with Post (4-0) atop the league standings.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Wednesday to visit University of the Sciences, starting at 3:00 pm.
