Game Recap: Softball |

Giampolo’s Game-Winning Single Lifts Softball to Split vs. Concordia

Freshman Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ) drove home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Goldey-Beacom a 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Concordia (NY) before a 1-0 loss in the nightcap at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Concordia in game one got RBI from Audrey Gardus in the second and fourth innings for a 2-0 lead.  She had a groundout in the second to plate Carly Mertens and then lined an RBI single in the fourth, scoring pinch-runner Kelsey Ruggirello.

The Lightning made it 2-1 in the fifth when Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) crushed a leadoff triple and fellow freshman Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) followed with an RBI single to right.  The home side then tied it in the sixth when, with the bases loaded and one out, Davis had a run-scoring groundout to plate junior Ryann Farley (Barnegat, NJ).

GBC then won it the seventh.  Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA), who closed with two hits, led off with a single through the left side and took second as fellow junior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) reached on Gardus' error at shortstop.  Farley got Mao over to third on a fielder's choice and Giampolo followed with a two-out single to short center field.

Dingmans Ferry, PA sophomore Natalie Mickles (4-8) pitched great in forcing the Clippers to leave 10 runners on base.  She allowed two runs and eight hits over seven innings with two strikeouts.

Sarah Ross (6-5) also was great in the circle, but was saddled with defeat despite three strikeouts and yielding three runs – two earned – and six hits over 6 2/3 frames.  Alexa Lavalle and Brittany Lampert had two hits apiece for Concordia.

The Clippers (13-8, 9-5 CACC) in the fourth inning of game two scratched and clawed their way to the contest's only run.  Ross had a leadoff double and was sacrificed to third by Lavalle.  Victoria Vickerman looked to give her squad the lead on a flyout, but sophomore right fielder Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) fired a great throw home that forced Ross to throw the brakes.  However, Giampolo followed with a wild pitch and Ross scampered 60 feet unscathed.

That was enough for Hannah Rubasky (5-3), who faced just five batters above the minimum over six innings, striking out two and surrendering only three hits.  Cassidy Gorgo worked a perfect seventh inning for her first save of the campaign.

Giampolo (3-8) kept GBC (7-23, 3-13) in it, but permitted one run and four hits over seven innings despite only facing six batters above the minimum.

Goldey-Beacom is scheduled to be back home Tuesday for a league doubleheader against Wilmington (DE), starting at 2:30 pm.  Please check GBCAthletics.com or Twitter (@GBCLightning) for any schedule changes.
