Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Handed Two Tough Losses by Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom was handed a 6-1 loss in the opener vs. Wilmington (DE) and then surrendered two, seventh-inning runs for a tough 2-1 setback in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

The Wildcats in the first inning of game one scored twice as shortstop Danielle Bradley had an RBI groundout and Kaitlyn Slater followed with a run-scoring double to left.  GBC got one back in the second when a muffed throw by first baseman Colby Wyatt allowed senior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) to cross home for a 2-1 contest.

Wyatt more than redeemed herself in the third, crushing a two-run homer over the 230-foot fence in left-center field for a 4-1 game.  Becca Stanley then went yard for a solo shot in the fourth before Slater added an RBI single later in the frame for the final.

Brooklyn Lachette (5-6) was never in peril in the circle, retiring the side in order five times and facing just four batters above the minimum.  She struck out six, allowing an unearned run and two hits in a victory that allowed Wilmington to clinch a spot in the eight-team CACC Tournament.

Stanley went 3-for-4, falling a triple short of the cycle, with Slater, Wyatt and Rizzotte each getting two hits for the Wildcats.

Dingmans Ferry, PA sophomore Natalie Mickles (4-9) yielded six runs and 10 hits over four innings for the Lightning.

The nightcap was a battle that saw GBC score first in the last of the fourth.  Freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) crushed a leadoff double and got to third when Schoff's grounder turned into a fielder's choice that was muffed by Bradley, who was covering third.  Sophomore Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) followed with a squeeze bunt that plated Murphy for a 1-0 lead.

The Lightning (7-25, 3-15 CACC) were cruising until the Wildcats (23-15, 17-1) batted in the seventh.  Stanley lined a one-out single, stole second and scored when Rizzotte lined a triple to right for a 1-1 game.  Bradley followed with a single to short-left-center field that plated Rizzotte for Wilmington's first lead.

Caitlin Whiteside (9-4), who started and then came on in relief in the sixth, tossed a perfect seventh inning for the victory.  Overall, she permitted an unearned run and three hits over 5 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Bradley had three hits with Rizzotte and Meghan Brown getting two each.

East Windsor, NJ freshman Alyssa Giampolo (3-9) allowed two runs and 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings for GBC.  Murphy closed with two hits.

Goldey-Beacom is home Thursday against Dominican (NY), starting at 2:30 pm.
