Softball Gains Doubleheader Split With Nyack

Goldey-Beacom in game two put together a tight and tidy performance in a 3-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Nyack after a 5-1 loss in the opener at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

The second game took a mere 60 minutes and arguably provided one of the Lightning's most efficient outings of the campaign.

GBC in the last of the fourth inning of a 0-0 game got a one-out double from Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) before fellow freshman Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) walked.  Senior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) singled and looked to give her squad the lead, but Murphy was gunned down at home on a great throw from left fielder Kim Yano.

But the Lightning did not have to worry for long as freshman Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ) followed with a blooper to right that dropped in for a two-run single and a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors closed the gap to 2-1 in the sixth when Yano flied out to right and an errant throw allowed Katie Lupinacci to race home from third.

GBC got than run back in the last of the frame for the final, beginning with sophomore Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) reaching on an infield single.  Murphy then grounded out to first, but first baseman Meghan Richards threw wildly to second and Brandle scampered all the way home.

Giampolo (3-6) was on her game throughout in facing just four batters above the minimum.  She allowed an unearned run and four hits over seven frames with a strikeout.

Kylie Brase (2-7) permitted three runs – two earned – and five hits over six innings with two walks for the Warriors.

A nail-biter in the opener that featured oodles of chances for each side saw Nyack break a 0-0 tie in the seventh.  With the bases loaded and one out, Alissa Brugnoli broke the ice with a hard-hit single to right center that plated Morgan Hans and Aferdita Sinanaj for a 2-0 margin.

Yano added another highlight to her standout game by following with a two-run single to right, plating Brugnoli and Lupinacci for a 4-0 lead.  Brase, two batters later, stroked an RBI double to right for a 5-0 cushion.

GBC (6-18, 2-10 CACC) ended the shutout on Davis' RBI double to left, plating Murphy.

Yano had six strikeouts, all within the first three innings, surrendering one run and nine hits over seven frames.  She also had two hits for Nyack (6-24, 3-9), as did Brugnoli and Brase.

Brandle had three hits and sophomore Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) added two for the Lightning, who left 15 runners on base.  Dingmans Ferry, PA sophomore Natalie Mickles (3-6) pitched great over the first six frames, but was charged with five runs – three earned – and eight hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.

Schoff had a hit in each contest, moving into 23rd place in school history with 102 career.

Goldey-Beacom begins a run of three doubleheaders in as many days Tuesday at East Stroudsburg, starting at 1:30 pm.
