Softball Drops Two at No. 12 West Chester



Goldey-Beacom ran into tough competition in 12th-ranked West Chester and was handed a doubleheader sweep, both by 8-0 scores in West Chester, PA.

West Chester in game one took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Laura Altenburger lined an RBI double to left center.  Monica Twardowski in the second inning got a run-scoring groundout for a 2-0 cushion.
 
The Golden Rams furthered their margin in the third when Sarah Walasavage crossed home on a throwing error and Cat Hammer lived up to her name with a solo home run for a 4-0 margin.
 
West Chester held a 5-0 lead in the fifth when Ashley Flesch lined a two-run single and then in the sixth saw Haley Taylor get an RBI single for a run-rule win.
 
Alyssa Herion and Micaela McSpadden got two hits apiece and Katie Erb (12-1) tossed five scoreless innings, striking out four and yielding only five hits for the Golden Rams.
 
Sophomore Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) recorded two hits and Dingmans Ferry, PA sophomore Natalie Mickles (4-12) allowed two runs and three hits over two innings for the Lightning.
 
The Golden Rams in game two grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third when Herion blasted a leadoff home run.  Hammer in the second inning lifted a sacrifice fly and McSpadden followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 contest.
 
West Chester (43-5) then plated five runs in the fifth for another run-rule win, keyed by Sara Ercolani's two-run single and ended when Altenburger crossed home on an error.
 
Walasavage, Ercolani and McSpadden all had two hits and Brooke Harner struck out six over five innings in her two-hit shutout, facing just two batters above the minimum.
 
East Windsor, NJ freshman Alyssa Giampolo (4-11) permitted eight runs – four earned – and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts for the Lightning (9-33).
 
West Chester is first in the NCAA Atlantic Region and is the fourth regionally ranked school from that area GBC has faced this season.  Sunday will mark the fifth as the squad visits No. 7 Lock Haven.  The Lightning on Monday split a doubleheader with No. 10 Millersville.
 
Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday visits Holy Family for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, starting at 2:00 pm at Bensalem High School.
