Game Recap: Softball |

Doyle’s Offense and Conway’s Defense Propel Softball to Split at Bridgeport

Kylie Doyle's two-run single in the seventh inning and fellow sophomore Lauren Conway's defensive gem for the final out lifted Goldey-Beacom to a dramatic 9-8 victory at Bridgeport to gain a split of the doubleheader in Bridgeport, CT.

The Lightning were handed a 9-7 loss by the Knights in the opener.

Trailing 4-1 entering the top of the third inning of the nightcap, GBC got a major boost as freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) crushed a two-run homer for her first collegiate long ball.  But the Knights plated four in the last of the fourth for an 8-3 margin thanks to Ashley Hessler's leadoff home run, Jenna DiLorenzo's RBI double and Meghan O'Leary's two-run homer.

Murphy then continued her impressive outing in the fifth with two runners on and two out.  She stepped into one and belted a three-run shot that brought the Lightning within 8-6 and chased starting pitcher Jennine Walsh.

Then came the drama that was the seventh inning.  Conway (Hammonton, NJ) led off with an infield single and reached third on an infield single from sophomore Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA).  Two batters later, junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) ripped an RBI single to center for an 8-7 contest and took second on the throw which also sent Brandle to third.  Doyle (Tower City, PA) followed with her decisive knock to center that gave the Lightning their first lead.

Kerri Agrela led off for Bridgeport in the seventh with a single before Stephanie Dean and Hessler each fouled out.  Janaya Young walked to advance pinch-runner Tara Faford to second and set up the ending.  Kaila Crandall lined a single to right and Faford tried to score the equalizer.  But Conway threw a strike to senior catcher Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD), who applied the tag for the finale.

Murphy recorded GBC's first five-RBI game of the season as she, Brandle and Mao each amassed two hits.  Mao (1-0) got the victory in her first appearance in the circle since last year, striking out two and yielding just four hits over 3 1/3 scoreless frames.

Crandall (1-1) allowed three runs – two earned – and four hits over 2 1/3 relief frames.  Paige Owens had three hits and DiLorenzo closed with three RBI.

GBC (8-28) in game one looked in great shape with a 5-0 lead after three innings.  Murphy had an RBI double in the first, Mao ripped a two-run homer later in the frame for her first career long ball and Schoff added an RBI double in the third.

But Bridgeport (13-23) erupted for nine runs in the fourth, all with two outs, for a 9-5 contest.  The highlights of the frame included DiLorenzo lining a two-run single and O'Leary cracking a three-run homer.

Junior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) recorded her first career four-hit contest, ending 4-for-4 with all coming on doubles, and Mao drove home three runs.  Millville, NJ freshman Alexa Calareso (0-5) allowed four runs and three hits without retiring a batter.

O'Leary had three RBI and Kamryn Beach closed with three hits for the Knights.  Kaitlyn Lajoie (6-8) gave up three runs – two earned – and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings with Crandall getting the final out for her first save of the year.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday for a doubleheader at 19th-ranked Caldwell, starting at noon in Caldwell, NJ.
