Mrad’s Third-Set Triumph Lifts Shorthanded Tennis to Win at UDC

Junior Amina Mrad (Berlin, Germany) rallied from a set down to convincingly win the last two sets, propelling an injury depleted Goldey-Beacom to a 5-4 triumph at the District of Columbia in Washington, DC.

Mrad dropped the opening set 7-6 to Alena Skobina at second singles, including 7-2 in the tiebreak, before buckling down with the tie on the line. With only this rubber remaining and the tie level, Mrad dug deep to win the second set 6-1 and the third by the same score.

The victory was her 24th career singles triumph, moving her into a tie with former teammate Maria Victoria (2013-15) for 10th place in school history.

The win capped Mrad's 2-0 day as she and junior Francesca Beg (Westbury, England) teamed for an 8-2 triumph at second doubles over Mona Looareesuwan and Zoe Mall.

Freshman Merel Ann van Zanten (Velserbroek, Netherlands) notched a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Laura Rojas at No. 5 singles for her 16th singles win, tying her with Filipa Correia (2012-13) and Stephanie Puentes Robinson (2014-15) for the fourth-best single-season mark in team history. Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Looareesuwan at No. 3 singles with fellow junior Pauline Rozet (Malakoff, France) getting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mall at fourth singles.

The Lightning (8-6) only had five players and forfeited the sixth singles and third doubles matches to the Firebirds (5-9).

Goldey-Beacom ends the season Sunday at Queens (NY), starting at 1:00 pm in Flushing.
