Softball Falls Twice to Mercy

Goldey-Beacom started play in gorgeous sunshine and ended in the rain with a pair of losses, 8-2 and 7-4, to Mercy at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Leading 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning of game one, Mercy kicked down the door with three runs for a four-run cushion.  Amanda Gardiner and Julie Gross each had RBI singles and Katiana Golino lifted a sacrifice fly.

The Mavericks got another run in the sixth on Gardiner's run-scoring double, making it 6-1, and two more in the seventh on McKaily Cusumano's two-run triple for an 8-1 contest.

Junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) had an RBI triple in the fourth and freshman Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE) added a run-scoring double in the seventh to account for the Lightning's scoring.

Gardiner, Gross and Marlena Marzigliano all had three hits for the Mavericks.  Jackie Kielty (2-2) struck out eight over seven innings, yielding two runs – one earned – and five hits.

Sophomore Kelsey Brandle (Bethlehem, PA) had two hits and Dingmans Ferry, PA sophomore Natalie Mickles (3-5) permitted five runs – four earned – and eight hits over five innings for the Lightning.

Mercy in game two scored three runs in the top of the third inning for a 4-0 lead.  Morgan Lloyd crushed a two-run triple and Cusumano followed with an RBI double.

But GBC game back in the last of the frame with four runs for a 4-4 tie.  Sophomore Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) cranked a two-run triple to right, freshman Shelby Murphy crushed an RBI triple and a grounder from senior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) was booted, allowing Murphy to score the tying run.

However, the Mavericks took the lead in the fifth.  Cusumano lined a one-out single, Kaylee Stevens walked and Gardiner walked as a pinch hitter to load the bases.  Golino followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Cusumano for a 5-4 contest.

Following an extensive lightning delay, Lloyd ripped a two-run triple to left in the sixth before the game was terminated by rain.

Stevens (2-0) struck out three over five innings, yielding four runs – three earned – and six hits over five innings.  Lloyd had four RBI with her and Cusumano each amassing two hits for the Mavericks (14-11).

Conway had two hits and Millville, NJ freshman Alexa Calareso (0-2) was charged with three runs and five hits over three innings for the Lightning (5-17).

Schoff in game two singled and became the 24th player in school history to reach 100 career hits.
