Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops Two at University of the Sciences

Goldey-Beacom let leads in both games slip away and was handed a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep, 4-3 and 7-2, by University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA.

After threatening in each of the first two innings, GBC in the top of the third finally broke through for a 2-0 lead.  Freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) lined a one-out double, took third when junior Charlee King (New Castle, DE) reached on an error and both scored as senior Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) roped a triple to deep right-center field.

Sophomore Natalie Mickles (Dingmans Ferry, PA) did a great job in the circle and helped her own cause in the sixth, giving the Lightning a 3-0 lead.  Sophomore Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) had a one-out infield single, took second on a single from junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) and scored when Mickles looped an RBI single to right.

But the Devils got to the Lightning with four runs in the last of the sixth after loading the bases with none out.  Emily Harris ripped a two-run single up the middle, Cassie Lapotsky tied the game with an RBI groundout and Ashley Lewis reached on an error that allowed Harris to score for a 4-3 game.

Murphy and King began the seventh inning with singles, but the next three Lightning batters were retired for the final.

Mickles (3-4) did her best, but was charged with four runs – three earned – and six hits over six innings.  Mao, Murphy and King each closed with two hits and junior Ryann Farley (Barnegat, NJ) extended her hitting streak to five games as the Lightning's 12-hit attack went to waste.  The 12 hits ties a season high from last Wednesday against Philadelphia University.

Lapotsky (4-6) got the win despite yielding three runs – two earned – and 12 hits over seven innings with three strikeouts for the Devils (8-17, 6-6 CACC).  Rebecca Colandrea closed with two hits.

GBC (5-15, 1-9) in game two scored twice in the top of the first inning.  Farley drew a leadoff walk, took second on King's single and scored when Schoff lined an RBI single.  Freshman Alyssa Giampolo (East Windsor, NJ) followed with a run-scoring triple, plating Schoff.

USciences got one back in the bottom of the frame when Badzgon's fielder's choice grounder scored Lewis, making it 2-1.  The home side then grabbed a 3-2 lead in the second on Lewis' run-scoring grounder and Badzgon's RBI single.

The Devils widened the lead to 5-2 in the last of the fifth with Evangelina Olivera scoring on an error and Lewis getting an RBI groundout.  Jackie Keifer and Jenna Hohenberger added RBI singles in the sixth for a 7-2 contest.

Kyla Colburn (2-1) struck out seven for USciences, yielding two runs and five hits over seven innings.  Lewis and Badzgon had two hits apiece.

Giampolo (2-6) was charged with five runs – one earned – and 10 hits over four-plus innings.

Goldey-Beacom is home Friday for a doubleheader against Mercy, starting at 2:30 pm.
