Softball Sweeps Two From Bowie State

Goldey-Beacom rode solid pitching and timely hitting for a 2-0 victory over Bowie State and then rallied from a four-run deficit to notch a 7-6 triumph in the nightcap at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning jumped on the Lady Bulldogs in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.  Junior Ryann Farley (Barnegat, NJ) singled, took second on a groundout from Charlee King (New Castle, DE) and scored when fellow junior Paulynn Mao (Anaheim, CA) cracked a double to left-center field.

East Windsor, NJ freshman Alyssa Giampolo (2-5) was doing her part in the circle, retiring 14 straight batters spanning the first through fifth innings to hold Bowie State at bay.  She only faced five batters above the minimum in the five-hit shutout.

GBC got an insurance run in the fifth for the final.  Farley drew a one-out walk and hustled all the way around to score when a grounder from freshman Shelby Murphy (Laurel, DE) was booted by second baseman Caitlin O'Neill.

The Lady Bulldogs in the seventh got the leadoff runner on with O'Neill's single, but Giampolo settled down to retire the next three batters.

Farley had two of her squad's four hits and Nicoleen Ochoa had two of Bowie State's five hits.  Ochoa (3-6) permitted two runs – one earned – and four hits over six innings with three strikeouts.

Bowie State in game two scored three times in the third for a 4-0 lead.  Tiffany Bearns keyed the spurt with a run-scoring double and O'Neill added an RBI single.

But the Lightning rallied in the last of the frame with four runs for a tie game.  Murphy laced an RBI triple, King followed with a run-scoring single and Giampolo launched a two-out, two-run double to deep left field.

Bowie State regained the advantage, 5-4, in the fourth on Jaelyn Belt's RBI triple, but GBC scored twice in the bottom of the inning for its first lead.  Murphy had another RBI triple and King followed with a run-scoring single to left.

Goldey-Beacom (5-13) added what turned out to be a key insurance run in the sixth when Farley delivered an RBI single to left-center field, making it 7-5.  Danielle Watt had a run-scoring groundout in the seventh to bring the Lady Bulldogs within 7-6, but Emily Lewis fouled out to senior catcher Alivia Schoff (Colora, MD) for the final.

Farley had two more hits in the contest to extend her hitting streak to four games and notched a career-high four stolen bases, moving her to six on the season.  Dingmans Ferry, PA sophomore Natalie Mickles (3-3) got the victory, yielding five runs – four earned – and seven hits over four innings.  Giampolo capped her solid day by allowing just one run and two hits over three innings for her first collegiate save.

Stefanie Ray (4-8) was breached for seven runs – five earned – and nine hits over six innings with five strikeouts for Bowie State (8-14).  Belt ended with three of her team's nine hits.

Goldey-Beacom is off until Tuesday, when it faces University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader.  First pitch in Philadelphia is at 3:00 pm.
